Angry Sierra Leoneans destroy captain’s homes
Angry Sierra Leoneans have attacked the home of their national team captain, Umaru Bangura, after he missed a decisive, stoppage-time, penalty kick.
Bangura’s penalty kick had been stopped by 18-year-old Liberian keeper, Ashley Williams, in front of a huge crowd in Freetown on Sunday.
Bangura failed to convert the penalty that would have put Sierra Leone through to the group stages of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.
Instead, Liberia went through, claiming one of the five places reserved for Africa at the tournament, scheduled to hold in Qatar.
According to BBC, fans smashed the windows and doors of Bangura’s home in Freetown.
Fans also reportedly attacked Red Cross staff and vandalised their ambulances after they were accused of shielding Bangura.
