Edo, Bauchi Assembly crises: Respect rule of law, APC tells Obaseki, Mohammed
By Idowu Isamotu, Abuja
The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Sunday called on the Edo State governor, Godwin Obaseki and his counterpart in Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed to respect the rule of law and issue a fresh proclamation the States’ House of Assemblies.
Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, the National Publicity Secretary of the party, at a press conference in Abuja specifically warned Obaseki to respect an order given to him by the House of Representatives in connection with the state’s House of Assembly Crisis
Issa-Onilu lamented how impunity that reigned during the erstwhile ruling People’s Democratic Party is currently reigning in Edo state, saying that is not the kind of reputation the APC wants to build for itself.
It would be recalled that members of the House of Representatives had last week Wednesday given a one-week ultimatum to the the Edo State Governor, Obaseki, to issue a fresh proclamation for the Edo State House of Assembly.
The 13-man ad hoc committee lawmakers had arrived at the resolution which its report was adopted at the chamber during the plenary.
But the Edo State governor, immediate past National Chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun and other stakeholders in the State had argued that the House of Representatives has no power to shut down or take over Edo State House of Assembly as directed in the ad hoc committee’s report.
Speaking on the development, the spokesperson of party, Issa-Onilu insisted that the constitution has stipulated that House of Representatives has power to direct the governor to do the right thing.
He said, “As far as Edo State Assembly elections is concerned, House of Representatives has done the right thing by ordering the governor to follow the rule of law.
“I feel ashamed as a member of APC that an APC State (Edo) is involved in impunity. That is not the kind of reputation we want to have. We would have conveniently deal with Bauchi because Bauchi is a PDP state and whatever is going on there is not strange because that is what has been in the PDP.
“We are no longer going to allow it no matter what! This is the issue, not somebody claiming that he is not allowed to govern. I don’t understand what exactly that is supposed to mean.”
