I.3m Refugees: Nigeria Plans Resettlement Cities

Federal Commissioner of National Commission for Refugee Migrants and
Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), Senator Bashir Mohammed has
said that resettlement cities will be built by government to   return
displaced persons to communities.


The resettlement cities of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), are to
be constructed across the country to return about a million IDPs.


The Commissioner disclosed this Wednesday, while flagging off the
distribution of relief materials to Borno IDPs at National Youths
Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp, Maiduguri.


Over 6,600 IDPs in NYSC camp; were attacked and displaced by Boko
Haram from Bama, Konduga and Damboa councils of Borno state.


 “The Federal Government’s idea on resettlement cities in 2020; was to
relocate all displaced persons from IDP camps and host communities to
their respective communities.” he said.


According to him, the idea was to move away from resettling people in
camps; to empowering IDPs with skills and trades.


He added that 300, 000 refugees in Chad, Niger and Cameroon, will also
repatriated to their respective communities in the country, including
the ones from Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states.


He said the construction of resettlement cities, comprises the
building of community vocational training centres for youths and
women.


Other facilities to be provided in the cities include schools,
hospitals, police posts and vocational training centres.


He said returnees are to be fully empowered and engaged in the various
the various acquired skills in agricultural and livestock production.


This, according to him, will enable returnee IDPs self-reliant; and
contribute to the development of their communities.
