Tension in #Bayelsa as Tribunal Summons Deputy Governor
The Bayelsa State Governorship Electoral Petitions Tribunal sitting in Abuja, has ordered the Deputy Governor of the state, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo to appear before it on Thursday, this week to produce the original copy of his disputed certificate,Radio Nigeria has reported.
The order of the Tribunal followed a subpoena earlier issued on Senator Ewhrudjakpo to appear and produce the original of the exemption certificate issued to him by the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, in 1998.
The subpoena was issued on the request of the candidate of the Liberation Movement, LM, in the November 16, 2019 governorship election in Bayelsa state, Mr. Vijah Opuama, who is challenging Senator Ewhrudjakpo’s qualification to stand election,
He is alleging that the deputy governor submitted a forged exemption certificate to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, before the election.
The senior counsel said that his client was no longer challenging the subpoena and was ready to attend the Tribunal’s sitting.
Although, the lead counsel to the defendant, Mr. Machukwu Ume, SAN, had on last month, challenged the competence of the subpoena and prayed the Tribunal to set it aside but changed his mind during the sitting and withdrew the motion.
Counsel to the petitioner, Mr. Pius Dande Pius and other parties in the matter did not object to the application to withdraw the motion, challenging the subpoena.
In its ruling, the Chairman of the Tribunal, Justice Ibrahim Sirajo struck out the motion and ordered Senator Ewhrudjakpo’s appearance on Thursday, this week.
