Legal Tussle may Halt Port Harcourt -Maiduguri Railway Contract

Legal tussle may stall Port Harcourt- Maiduguri rail project if the exit plan and settlement with outgoing contractors are not handled with care, feelers from Nigeria has revealed.

Checks showed that certain interests are pushing to browbeat and coerce the previous contractors into exiting the project without a settlement plan.

Tactics adopted according to investigation include alleged reports that the three companies involved were not properly registered and that they did little or no work while the duration of the contract lapsed.

There are also extensive damaging reports about the handling of the projects by previous administration , a process and activities widely seeing as preparing ground to deny the old contractors exit plan settlement.

An official of one of the old contracting companies which contacted Railway Business described the campaign to discredit them as ” badly thought out and likely to pose challenge to the government.

“All processes for the award of the contacts were followed . Certificate of no objection, approval by Federal Executive Council, certificate of job completion at various stages among others.

“Government reserves right to review contacts as long as it complies with the contracts terms. An exit plan is the way and paying settlement is widely known industry practices.

” Sponsoring slanderous articles to discredit our companies will not remove the fact that an exit plan with settlement payment is a must. The Minister of Transportation , Rail director and the MD of NRC are all aware of this.

” If our firms are denied our the rights , we seek legal redress”, the official warned.
