Nigeria has become polio free after concerted efforts by many philantropists and especially the Rotary international organisation.

Nigeria had earlier being put in the same category with Afganistan and Pakistan.

The World Health Organisation announced Nigeria’s exit during the week with a warning that the nation should remain vigilant.

Several individuals and organisations made efforts to realise the dream but very outstanding is Sir Emeka Offor, the billionaire businessman.

Meanwhile, the President of Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI), Prince Adetokunbo Kayode has congratulated the life patron of the Chamber, Sir Emeka Offor for donating huge amount of money in different tranches that accounted for the defeat of polio is Nigeria.

Also, a youth group, Society for Youth Research in Nigeria has described the frontline role of Chief Offor and Rotary on polio eradication as ” worthy of national recognition”

Prince Kayode said the commitment of millions of dollars by the Sir Emeka Offor Foundation towards eradication of polio in Nigeria can simply be described as a gesture worthy of emulation.

It could be noted that Nigeria is now certified polio-free by The World Health Organisation (WHO) following the completion of documentation for the free status after several years of been one of the very few countries to be harbouring the virus.

In a message sent to Sir Offor during the week, Prince Kayode described the philanthropist as a man whose genuine concern for humanity has conspicuously stand him out among his peers in Nigeria and beyond.

“It is on record that no one on the entire continent of Africa has made financial commitment towards the global fight against the dreaded polio virus like you have. By doing this you have given hope to those younger generation who would have been unfortunately infected with the disease.

“I receive this news with great enthusiasm having known the personal sacrifices that you have made over the years towards the global efforts in combating the polio monster. And now that the disease has been effectively rolled back, I know how fulfilled you are feeling. And we join you in celebrating with the other stakeholders that partnered you on this long but successful journey.

“It was disheartening at a point when events challenged your efforts to rid the country of the dreaded disease. But you summoned the rare courage to wrestle polio for many years and today, I can say you have enjoyed remarkable success. With rare commitment, you refocused and join hands to continue the fight to ensure that all children are safe from the disease.

“It is on this note that i join members of Rotary International all over the world to celebrate this no mean feat” Prince Kayode noted.

Prince Kayode further expressed optimism that the Foundation will not view the declaration as an end but an opportunity to remain vigilante using effective monitoring strategies.

In a statement by the youth research group signed by its Director, Rantilola Olaposi, Offor was described as “a committed philantropist who devoted huge resources to support polio eradication in Nigeria”, calling on federal authorities to officially recognise his contributions.

“We have followed Chief Offor multi-billion naira contributions to polio eradication from the begining. We acknowledge his pioneering role. We commend his selfless support for a worthy cause.

” We call on federal authoritties in Nigeria to officially recognise Chief Offor and Rotary organisation. We must recognise those who support humanity in a world where man inhumanity to man is now a norm”, the group noted.

The Society for Youth Research In Nigeria pledged to kickstart the recognition by organising a helpers of humanity forum later in the year to honour Chief Offor.
