Eight habits that can weaken your memory

Memory is the ability to recall events and information. Everyone is born with a memory but through our lifestyles, it can become weak instead of it to be strengthened as we grow older. The choices you make not only have effects on your physical appearance but mentally as well. You need to be aware of the things you do (either knowingly or unknowingly) that can weaken your memory.

Below are the habits that can weaken your memory:

  1. Consuming too much alcohol
Consuming too much alcohol can weaken your memory and damage your short-term and long-term memory. Also, dementia can set it in if you don’t stop drinking. Even taking alcohol in moderation can still weaken the memory.
  2. Not drinking enough water
When you don’t drink enough water, it can lead to fatigue, poor concentration and headaches. Staying hydrated enhances the memory and your overall performance mentally. If you’re forgetful or sluggish, water can help support your brain activity.
  3. Not socialising
Socialising plays a crucial role in the mental well-being of every man. Interaction with others helps the brain to process information quickly, engage in serious discussions and remember people. Socialising can lower the risk of being mentally derailed. Loneliness can increase your chances of getting memory related disorders.
  4. Constant stress
When you’re constantly stressed, your learning capacity will reduce and also your memory. People under constant stress struggle to concentrate or remember things. Being overwhelmed with thoughts can also damage your mental health.
  5. Not sleeping well
Depriving yourself of adequate sleep can impede your ability to store information and even remember things. Lack of sleep will not let you concentrate throughout the day: you would just feel unproductive.
  6. Too much reliance on technology
Another habit that can weaken your memory is relying too much on technology. When you stop using your brain to recall information such as addresses, passwords or any other details, you start losing the mental exercise that keeps the memory strong. In other words, over-dependence on digital devices makes the brain relaxed and not to remember things because it already assumes the device will get it done.
  7. Lack of exercise
Exercise is not only beneficial to your physical appearance but your mental health as well. Exercise delivers oxygen, nutrients and increases blood flow to the brain. It also helps in the release of chemicals that promote the growth of new cells for the brain.
  8. Consuming too much processed food
Processed foods can cause oxidative stress to the brain because they contain unhealthy fats, artificial additives and plenty of sugar. If you continue to take processed foods all the time, it can result in slow cognitive function. Diet rich in healthy fats, whole foods and antioxidants improves memory and protects the brain.
