I stole two tubers of yam because of hunger, Man tells court

Cletus Gandu, a 40-year-old unemployed man, appeared in the Magistrates’ Court in Kafanchan, Kaduna State, on Wednesday, where he confessed to stealing two tubers of yam due to hunger.

Gandu is facing charges of criminal trespass and theft brought against him by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

Gandu admitted in court, “Hunger pushed me to steal yam on two occasions. I beg for leniency.”

The presiding judge, Michael Bawa, acknowledged Gandu’s guilty plea and has reserved sentencing until August 6, while ordering that Gandu be remanded in custody.

The NSCDC Prosecutor, Mr Marcus Audu, informed the court that the complaint was lodged by Alice Daniel on July 15.

Audu detailed that Gandu had stolen the yams from Daniel’s farm in Zonkwa on two separate occasions.

The charges against Gandu contravene sections 327 and 270 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law.
