Aitana Bonmati wins second straight Women’s Ballon d’Or award

Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmati has won the Ballon d’Or Féminin for the second consecutive year, overcoming competition from her teammate Caroline Graham Hansen and other top nominees.

The 26-year-old’s exceptional performances played a pivotal role in Barcelona’s historic quadruple last season, marking the first time the club’s women’s team has achieved this feat.

Aitana Bonmatí’s season with Barça saw her lift four major titles: her fifth Liga F, third Women’s Champions League, sixth Copa de la Reina, and fourth Spanish Supercopa.

She starred for Spain in their Women’s Nations League victory, scoring in the 2-0 final triumph over France, further building on her impressive World Cup-winning campaign.

Her Ballon d’Or win continues Barcelona’s dominance in the award, with a Barça player claiming the honor for the fourth straight year. Previous winner Alexia Putellas held the title in 2021 and 2022 before suffering an ACL injury that sidelined her for much of last season, thrusting Bonmatí into an even more significant role for both club and country.

Bonmatí’s 2023-24 season was one of her best yet, featuring 41 appearances across all competitions, 19 goals, and 17 assists.

Her outstanding contributions earned her the Women’s Champions League Player of the Season award and the Player of the Match title in the final, where Barça defeated Lyon 2-0 to clinch their second consecutive Champions League trophy.
