Governor Namadi Inaugurates Livestock Reforms Committee to Boost Agriculture

Governor Malam Umar Namadi, today at the Council Chambers, inaugurated the Jigawa State Livestock Reforms Implementation Committee to drive the state’s agricultural transformation policy as regards the livestock sector.

This move is in line with the National Livestock Reforms agenda championed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and demonstrates the state’s commitment to revitalizing its livestock sector to enhance economic growth and sustainability.

Chaired by Governor Namadi, the 17-man committee, which brings together a diverse group of experts and officials from the agriculture and livestock sectors, is tasked with delivering practical and impactful reforms.

The committee will focus on key goals such as improving livestock productivity, resolving land-use conflicts, enhancing market access, and adopting sustainable farming practices.

In his remarks, Governor Namadi highlighted the critical role of the livestock sector, stating that it contributes over 30% to Jigawa State’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

“The livestock sector holds immense potential for our state. It is not only a vital source of food and livelihood for our people but also a significant contributor to our state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), exceeding 30%. Recognizing this critical sector’s importance, this administration is determined to unlock its full potential through a comprehensive and sustainable reform agenda.”

Demonstrating his personal commitment to the project by serving as committee chairman to ensure its success, the governor called on members to develop actionable, locally tailored plans for the implementation of the livestock reform agenda in Jigawa State.

“We must carefully analyze the specific needs and challenges of our livestock sector, adapt national strategies to our unique context, and develop innovative solutions that will benefit all stakeholders,” he said.

Key to the Committee’s mission will be engaging stakeholders, including livestock farmers, herders, processors, researchers, and community leaders, through which the Committee aims to produce practical, inclusive solutions that address the specific challenges facing the sector.

Governor Namadi further stressed the importance of collective efforts in making Jigawa a better place for its citizens.

“Let us work together to ensure that Jigawa State becomes a model for successful livestock development in Nigeria, demonstrating our unwavering support for the Renewed Hope agenda and our commitment to building a prosperous and sustainable future for our people.”

Governor Namadi had, in December, while presenting the 2025 budget to the Jigawa State House of Assembly, revealed the state government’s plan to establish a ministry for livestock development in the state within the fiscal year.
