Cash Crisis: Furious customers set ATM ablaze in Lagos

An Automated Teller Machine (ATM) at a bank in the Idi Araba area of Lagos has been burnt by some angry customers after the ATM reportedly ran out of cash.It was learnt that the incident temporarily brought activities at the bank to a halt as police were mobilised to the scene.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed the incident, said normalcy had been restored.He, however, did not disclose the name of the bank or if any arrest was made.

“Somewhere in Idiaraba this morning, some individuals got angry that an ATM ran out of cash and set fire to the machine. The nearest police patrol was despatched to the scene.

“Tahe fire has been put out, crowd put under control and normal banking activities have resumed,” he wrote on his Twitter page.

There have been violent protests across the country in recent days over naira scarcity following the upset caused by the Central Bank of Nigeria naira redesign policy.

Several banks have been burnt in different parts of the country as many Nigerians, who could hardly withdraw money from their bank accounts, continue to lament cash crunch.
