Residents of Imo town in Ilesa North-East Local Government Area of Osun State have vowed to end female genital mutilation practice in the town because of its harmful consequences.
Female circumcision is practised in some parts of the state and there are efforts to sensitise people on the dangers of the age-long traditional practice.
At a community dialogue in the town, residents said they had been educated about the dangers of female circumcision and vowed to end the practice in the town.
The State Reproductive Health Coordinator at the Osun State Ministry of Health, Mrs Toyin Adelowokan said FGM is a traditional practice that involves the partial or total removal of external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons.
Adelowokan said the prevalence of Female Genital Mutilation in Osun State has reduced from 77.6 per cent to 45.9 per cent according to Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey.
