As the world marks World Teachers’ Day 2025, the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Public Accounts, Representative Bamidele Salam, has called for a national rethink of the teaching profession, urging that it be elevated into a truly collaborative, inclusive, and well-supported vocation.
In a personally signed statement commemorating the global event, Rep. Salam, who represents Ede North, Ede South, Egbedore, and Ejigbo Federal Constituency of Osun State at the National Assembly, paid tribute to educators across the country and beyond emphasised the urgent need for systemic reforms in the education sector.
This year, celebration revolve around the theme, “Recasting teaching as a collaborative profession”.
“In an era marked by global challenges, technological advancement, and the shifting demands of modern education, teaching must evolve into a profession where educators are not isolated executors of curriculum, but co-creators of knowledge, policy influencers, and community builders,” Salam said.
A trained educator and Director at Oasis Academy in Osun State, Salam described teaching as the cornerstone upon which all other professions are built.
“There is no engineer without a teacher, no doctor without a teacher, no leader without a teacher,” he said.
He also used the occasion to highlight the significance of World Teachers’ Day, which commemorates the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, calling it “a global commitment to uphold the rights, responsibilities, and working conditions of teachers.”
“As Chairman of the House Committee on Public Accounts, I reaffirm my commitment to transparency, accountability, and advocacy for increased investment in education,” Salam stated.
He stressed that concrete action is needed beyond ceremonial praise.
He called for timely remuneration, improved infrastructure, modern training resources, and a safe, enabling environment for teachers and students alike.
To educators nationwide, especially those serving in remote and underserved communities, Salam offered a message of gratitude: “Your dedication, perseverance, and sacrifice do not go unnoticed. You are not just imparting knowledge; you are sowing seeds that will bear fruit for generations.”
He concluded with a call for teachers to be granted a stronger voice in policymaking and national development efforts, saying, “Let us give teachers a seat at the table in policy, in planning, and in nation-building.”
World Teachers’ Day is celebrated annually on October 5th to recognise the critical role of teachers in shaping education and society.
