A South African rugby league match between Never Despair and Porterville was disrupted after a player was stabbed by a fan at the half-time break.
The player was rushed to hospital and was later discharged after a successful operation on Sunday, Daily Mail reported on Tuesday.
Police detained the attacker after he was chased down by players and the Never Despair chairman.
Boland Rugby Union in a statement condemned the incident and confirmed the match to be abandoned as the referee was too traumatised to continue the game.
South African Rugby Union President, Mark Alexander, also condemned the incident.
