The Yobe State government is to establish three Livestock Development Centres (LIDCs) to boost livestock production and avert incessant farmers/herders clashes.
The development centres will be sited at Badegana, Gurjiyaye and Nguru, 245 kilometres, northwest of Damaturu, the Yobe state capital.
Governor Mai Mala Buni unfolded the LIDCs, while recently presenting N207 billion budget for 2024 to the State House of Assembly in Damaturu.
He said that contracts will be awarded to complete the three livestock development projects at the cost of N828 million.
“The award of the projects was part of our measures to enhance the economic wellbeing of the people,” he said, noting that this will also avert perennial farmers-herders crisis clashes in the state.
He added that government will ensure the completion of the Nasari Livestock Development Center which has reached completion stage.
Buni, therefore, assured that his administration will procure more fertilizer among other agricultural inputs to support farmers to boost production.
Buni urged the council chairmen to imbibe accountability, transparency and due process while implementing people-oriented projects that could improve their living conditions.
He also directed the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to supervise and monitor the performances of the Council Management Committees. He noted that the measures are to explore and deepen Internally Generated Revenues (IGR) sources in each of the councils.
“We’re to conduct local council elections in May, 2024,” he said, adding that this will deepen democratic process at the grassroots.
