PDP shifts NEC meeting to May 15

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rescheduled its 99th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting from March 13 to May 15, 2025, citing the need for further consultations and the conclusion of outstanding congresses at various levels of the party.

In a statement signed by the PDP National Secretary, Sunday Okoye, the party explained that the decision followed deliberations among key stakeholders, including the Board of Trustees (BoT), the PDP Governors’ Forum, and the PDP National Assembly Caucus.

According to the statement, “Following emerging issues, including the need to conclude our pending Zonal, State, L.G.A, and Ward Congresses as well as to allow for further consultation to ensure a hitch-free conduct of the meeting, the NWC after due consultation with leaders, stakeholders, and relevant organs of the party has decided to shift the NEC meeting to Thursday, May 15, 2025.”

The rescheduling comes at a time when the PDP is battling intense internal skirmishes and engaging in political strategizing ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party has been working to resolve internal disputes, strengthen its grassroots presence, and solidify its position as Nigeria’s main opposition force.

The postponement is also seen as a strategic move to ensure that all party structures, from the ward to the national level, are properly aligned before critical decisions are made at the NEC meeting.

The PDP assured its NEC members that the shift was in the best interest of the party and aimed at fostering unity and effective decision-making.

“The NWC sincerely regrets any inconveniences this change of date will cause distinguished members of NEC,” the statement added.

As the PDP continues its internal reorganization, the upcoming NEC meeting in May is expected to address crucial party issues, including leadership restructuring, electoral strategy, and even the proposed coalition of opposition parties to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
