Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa has appealed to Nigerians to support the team’s bid to win a fourth AFCON title at the 34th edition of the tournament, which will take place from January 13 to February 11 in Ivory Coast.
Nigeria has been drawn into Group A alongside host Cote d’Ivoire, Guinea-Bissau, and Equatorial Guinea.
Supporters of the Super Eagles have expressed disappointment at the team’s preparation after their 2-0 loss to Guinea in their last test game for the tournament in Abu Dhabi on Monday.
Musa, while speaking to NFF TV, called on Nigerians not to lose their trust in the team.
He said, “Everybody is excited and waiting to go to Abidjan. After the last game in Uyo, when the campaign started, we told ourselves to go there to shine. We can see all the quality in the squad, and we can’t say otherwise. In football, anything can happen, but we have confidence.
“Even the coach has set a target of winning the AFCON for himself too. I just want Nigerians to believe in the team; with their support, we can go far.”
Musa and Ahmed Musa are the only members of the current squad who were part of the AFCON-winning squad 11 years ago. The duo could become the first players in Nigeria’s history to win the AFCON twice.
The Super Eagles’ first game at the tournament is against Equatorial Guinea on Sunday, January 14, at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan.
