Kano Government Hails Appeal Court Ruling on Emirate Council Dispute

The Kano State Government has expressed profound satisfaction with the recent Court of Appeal judgment, which upheld its reforms in traditional institutions and reversed earlier Federal High Court rulings concerning the Kano Emirate Council.

In a press conference held at the NUJ Press Centre in Kano on Saturday, January 11, 2025, and jointly addressed by the Attorney General/Commissioner for Justice, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and the Commissioner for Information, 44 Local Government Chairmen and Director Media and Publicity, the government reaffirmed its commitment to justice, fairness, and modernization of traditional institution while preserving Kano’s cultural heritage.

The appellate court’s ruling validated the actions taken by the Kano State Government regarding chieftaincy appointments and reforms, emphasizing that these actions were in line with the law and the constitution.

The judgment also clarified the rightful jurisdiction over chieftaincy matters, stating that the Federal High Court had no authority to interfere in such issues.

“For the avoidance of doubt, all decisions, pronouncements, and orders made by the Federal High Court in Kano have been quashed and set aside by the Court of Appeal,” the government representatives led by Attorney General Barr. Haruna Isa Dederi stated.

“Furthermore, the law enacted by the Kano State House of Assembly relating to Emirates, and all actions taken by His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kano State pursuant to that law, have been fully upheld and legalized by the Court of Appeal.”

The ruling reinforces the state government’s reforms, which aim to ensure equitable representation, inclusive governance, and the strengthening of traditional institutions for the benefit of all Kano residents.

The Kano State Government called on all public and private institutions, as well as individuals, to respect and comply with the Court of Appeal’s decision to give full effect to the judgment.

“We extend our gratitude to the Judiciary for upholding the principles of justice and fairness,” the statement continued.

“The Kano State Government remains committed to working in harmony with traditional institutions to foster development and unity across all emirates.”

The government urged all parties to set aside differences and work together to promote peace and progress in Kano State. It reiterated its commitment to prioritizing the collective good of the state over individual interests.

The press conference ended with a call for support and cooperation from the people of Kano State to continue building a united and prosperous future.
