2025 Democracy Day: Rep. Bamidele Salam Calls For Transparent Governance, Deeper Citizens’ Participation

As Nigeria marks Democracy Day, the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Public Accounts, Representative Bamidele Salam has called for renewed national commitment to transparency, accountability, and citizens’ participation as the foundation for sustainable democracy and good governance.

In a statement issued by his media Assistant, Joshua Afolabi on Thursday in Abuja, Rep. Salam described June 12 as more than a public holiday, calling it “a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by countless Nigerians in the struggle for democratic freedom, and an urgent call to uphold the values they fought for.”

“The story of June 12 is not just about elections, it is about the will of the people. It is about truth, justice, and the right of every Nigerian to live under a government that is accountable, inclusive, and fair,” he said.

As Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, Rep. Salam reaffirmed the Committee’s oversight responsibility to ensure that public resources are used efficiently and in line with the principles of equity and justice.

He emphasised that the deepening of democratic norms must go hand-in-hand with fiscal discipline and open governance.

“No democracy can thrive where public institutions are shrouded in opacity, and where the voices of citizens are drowned by impunity.”

“We must build a democratic culture where accountability is not just expected, but enforced, where public funds are not misused, and where leaders are held to the highest standards of integrity,” Salam declared.

He urged Nigerians to actively engage in the democratic process beyond voting, including by demanding transparency at all levels of government, participating in civic discourse, and holding public officials accountable.

“Democracy thrives when citizens are vigilant, informed, and involved.”

“As we commemorate this Democracy Day, let us remember that the work of democracy is never finished. It is a daily commitment to justice, fairness, and collective progress,” he noted.

Rep. Salam concluded by paying tribute to the heroes of Nigeria’s democratic struggle, especially the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, whose mandate symbolised the voice of a nation seeking true change.
