Nigeria Nominates Dr. Taoheed Olufemi Elias for Election to International Court of Justice

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced the nomination of Dr. Taoheed Olufemi Elias as the country’s candidate for election to the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

In a statement on Tuesday, the government described Dr. Elias as one of the most respected figures in international law, with an extensive record of legal scholarship, decades of service to the global community, and a strong commitment to justice, equity, and the rule of law.

According to the statement, his nomination reflects Nigeria’s firm belief in a rules-based international order, where justice is impartial, peace is preserved, and all nations regardless of size or power have an equal voice in shaping a fairer and more secure future.

“The Government of Nigeria calls on the international community to support Dr. Elias’s candidacy, confident that his election to the Court will strengthen the cause of global justice and advance the peaceful settlement of disputes among nations,” the statement read.

The ICJ, also known as the World Court, is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations, responsible for settling legal disputes between states and giving advisory opinions on international legal issues.
