Cole Palmer signs new nine-year contract at Chelsea

Chelsea forward Cole Palmer has signed a new two-year contract extension, tying himself to Stamford Bridge until 2033, according to journalist David Ornstein.

The 22-year-old, who joined Chelsea from Manchester City last summer for £40 million, has quickly become one of the Premier League’s standout performers.

“Cole Palmer commits future to Chelsea by signing 2yr contract extension. 22yo England attacker already tied down until 2031; terms now through to June 2033. Rewards brilliant debut season after joining from Manchester City,” Ornstein said in a post on X on Tuesday

Palmer’s debut season in west London was spectacular as he registered 25 goals and 15 assists in all competitions.

His impressive form earned him a spot in the England squad for Euro 2024, where he made a significant impact. Palmer set up Ollie Watkins’ winner in the semi-final and scored the equaliser in the final against Spain, although England ultimately fell short.

Despite the scrutiny Chelsea has faced in recent years over their transfer strategy since Clearlake Capital’s acquisition of the club from Roman Abramovich, Palmer has proven to be an exceptional success story.

His new contract comes on fresh terms, rewarding his stellar performances in his debut campaign.

Palmer featured in the last pre-season game against Inter Milan under new manager Enzo Maresca. He is also expected to be in action when Chelsea faces his former club, Manchester City, in their season opener on Sunday.

Meanwhile, as Chelsea secures Palmer’s future, uncertainty looms over another England international, Conor Gallagher.

Gallagher had agreed to a move to Atletico Madrid for £33.7 million and even completed a medical with the La Liga side.

However, complications over a deal involving Samu Omorodion moving in the opposite direction have put the transfer at risk.

Chelsea has requested Gallagher return to London while the situation is resolved, with Tottenham reportedly maintaining interest in the 24-year-old midfielder.

Talks between Atletico and Chelsea are ongoing to finalise the deal.
