Updated: Osun road crash claim seven lives, Adeleke mourns

Seven people, including three school children, on Tuesday, lost their lives in multiple road accidents that occurred in Osogbo, Osun State.

The Head of Operations, Osun Emergency Ambulance Service, Elizabeth Arowosafe, told The PUNCH that the agency responding to a distress call from the scene of the accident evacuated both the dead and injured victims to Osun State University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo.

Arowosafe also said four of those involved in the accident were already dead before they were evacuated from the scene, adding that police operatives and officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps were also involved in the rescue operation.

She said, “The accident involved an 18-passenger bus and a tricycle. The bus was heading towards Lameco Junction.

“The driver possibly lost control and the vehicle somersaulted and landed on the opposing lane that passes the front of WOCDIF Centre hitting a tricycle that was heading towards the Stadium end of the dual carriageway. The tricycle had on board five school children, the driver and a male adult.”

Giving further details, the spokesperson for the Osun Sector of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Agnes Ogungbemi, said three vehicles were involved in the crash.

Ogungbemi said that the probable cause of the accident was, a “tyre burst, speed violation and loss of control,” adding that one female child was injured, and seven people, (four male adults, two male children and one female child), died.

Meanwhile, Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has condoled the families of those who died in the accident.

A statement by the spokesperson to the governor, Olawale Rasheed, quoting Adeleke read, “I am distraught to hear about the terrible accident. It is really painful for me, and I want to use this avenue to commiserate with the families of the deceased.”
