A non-governmental organisation, Alaafia Fun Ilu Ede, has raised concern over what it described as the increasing abuse of hard drugs among youths in Ede, Osun State, calling for urgent and collective action to address the situation.

The Coordinator of the group, Olaniyan Qamordeen, made the call in a statement issued on Monday, warning that the trend poses a serious threat to the future of the community.

Olaniyan expressed worry over the growing involvement of young people in substance abuse, noting that the effects were already being felt across the town.

According to him, the development has contributed to rising cases of disorderly conduct and insecurity, adding that many youths were jeopardising their mental health and future prospects due to drug addiction.

He lamented that the problem had spread to secondary school students who should be concentrating on their education and personal development.

“The future of Ede lies in these youths. If we fail to act now, we risk losing a whole generation,” he said.

The coordinator called on traditional rulers, community leaders, religious institutions, youth organisations and other stakeholders to unite in confronting the menace.

He emphasised that tackling drug abuse requires coordinated efforts, stronger community engagement and support for rehabilitation initiatives.

Olaniyan also stressed the need for accountability and proactive measures to curb the availability and consumption of illicit substances in the town.

He urged residents to prioritise the wellbeing of young people and work collectively to restore discipline, peace and social responsibility within the community.

The group said it had commenced an awareness campaign aimed at sensitising youths and residents on the dangers of drug abuse, while advocating sustained intervention to safeguard the future of Ede.
