GOVERNOR NAMADI RECEIVES INVESTIGATION REPORT ON MAJIA TRAGEDY, PROMISES SWIFT IMPLEMENTATION
Governor Malam Umar Namadi today received the report of the Investigation Committee on the Majia tanker explosion. The presentation ceremony was held at the Council Chambers, Government House, Dutse, which marks a crucial step in the state government’s efforts to address the tragic fire incident that occurred on October 14, 2024.
The committee, chaired by DIG Hafiz M. Inuwa (Rtd), was constituted on October 21, 2024, and tasked with investigating the remote and immediate causes of the fire, assessing the damage, and providing actionable recommendations to prevent future occurrences.
While highlighting the key findings of the investigation, the Chairman revealed that the fire, which claimed 209 lives, injured dozens, and affected 167 families, was attributed to factors such as damaged road infrastructure, night driving, and excessive speed. The inferno was further fueled by friction during the scooping of spilled fuel at the scene. Properties worth millions of Naira were also destroyed.
The committee proposed several recommendations, including regular inspections for petroleum transport and articulated vehicles; upgrading emergency response centers across the state; creation of trauma centers and burn units; establishment of a dedicated road traffic management agency; implementation of sustainable empowerment schemes in Majia town; provision of support for vulnerable victims and their families; and enrolling the most affected families in the state’s social welfare initiative.
Responding, the Governor commended the committee for their excellent work, praising their diligence and adherence to the timeline.
“I want to assure you that your efforts will not be in vain. The report, as read by the Chairman, is precise, concise, and addresses all the pertinent issues. I want to assure you that the government of Jigawa State will wholeheartedly support and implement your recommendations.” He said.
He further praised the committee for their sacrifices and dedication, emphasizing the government’s commitment to enhancing road safety, improving emergency response, and supporting the affected families.
Governor Namadi also acknowledged the responsiveness and swift interventions of the state government during the crisis, including the provision of medical care, financial aid, and psychological support to victims and their families.
