The Ogun State House of Assembly complex in Abeokuta has been fortified with stringent security measures as members-elect convened for their inauguration on Tuesday.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that Police operatives, alongside personnel from the State Security Services (SSS) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), were deployed to ensure the safety and security of the event.
The heightened security presence is believed to be linked to the intense competition for the coveted position of the House Speaker.
It should be noted that the House Clerk, Deji Adeyemo, unexpectedly postponed the assembly’s inauguration just three hours before the scheduled time on June 13.
Of the 26 seats in the House, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) holds 17, while the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) occupies the remaining nine seats.
Incumbent Speaker of the 9th assembly, Olakunle Oluomo, is vying to retain his position but faces a formidable challenge from former Deputy Speaker Oludaisi Elemide.
As of the time of reporting, the members-elect had taken their seats in the chamber.
