The Provost of Foreign Links College of Education Ile-Ife, Dr Nsikak Jacob Akpan is set to attempt to break Guinness World Record by 150 hours marathon lecture on “Relationship between Environment and Health” starting from 23rd September.
The remarkable attempt is not just to break world record but also about educating people on the importance of environmental health.
This was disclosed by Dr Akpan during a press conference on Friday at Foreign Links College Main Hall in Moro, Ile Ife.
While speaking with newsmen, the Public Health Expert, explained that Prof. Albin Misra from India is presently the holder of the record and it is time for someone else to take it.
According to him, the attempt is
a way of giving back to the society as an environmentalist, and also a means of providing environmental protection, for the protection of human health.
His words, “My reason for the attempt is that presently, an Indian Professor Albin Misra is the present holder of this record since Ten years ago. Record needs to be broken that’s one, then beyond that, we are in academic, so it is a way of giving back to academy world.
“I am a public health expert,it is a way of impacting in public health. I’m an environmentalist, it’s a way of giving back for environmental protection and for the protection of the public health. This is the only way I can reach the world to let them know what can affect their health. So beyond the record, it is a way of giving back to the world
“Why I chose this topic “Relationship between Environment and Health” is because 80 to 90 percent of whatever disease or health condition any human being is passing through is linked to the environment. They’re called environmental diseases, but people don’t actually know, people spend much money in the hospital for treatment, when they’re the architect of their problem.
“So this topic will address what human beings have done to the environment and what environment has done to their health. I chose the law of thermodynamics; that energy can neither be created nor destroyed but transformed from one form to another ” and law of motion which says ; “to every action there’s equal and opposite reaction” a body will continue on a state of rest until an external force act on it. The environment is not safe naturally until man begins to destroy the environment and environment will still be give it back to man.
“I mentioned diseases like cholera and malaria, and so on, all these are linked directly to the environment, so I want people to know that they can live healthy but they can also be sick if the environment is sick. There are consequences for deforestation, all these chemicals we put into farm plants will later be transferred into human body, that’s why I chose this topic to create awareness.
“I aim to achieve, beside the record that will be brought to Nigeria, i want to educate the world. The world will be conscious of their environment. Environment will be served, human beings will also live longer”, he explained.
The Obafemi Awolowo University Alunmi, however, assured that there will be no health challenge during the whole process because he has considered his health before attempting to embark on the record breaking.
“I am a Public health expert and I have considered my health, I did my health check up, there will be no challenge. I already have my medical team on ground, we will be working together. And will be having 20 minutes break after every 4hours.
“There are a lot of things to do, so I’m still seeking for support from Government and non governmental organizations, thank you so much”, he added.
