Osun Chapter of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has asked members of the union and the general public to ignore a call by a fake group directing local government workers to return to work.
Chairman of union, Dr Kehinde Ogungbangbe in statement noted that it is imperative to clarify that the actions taken by the NULGE leadership are driven solely by a commitment to protect the well-being and safety of all Local Government workers amid the ongoing crisis in the state.
The statement reads, “Dr. Kehinde Ogungbangbe, President of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Osun State Chapter, wishes to respond to the recent allegations stating that NULGE’s leadership has acted in disregard for the welfare of local government workers. It is imperative to clarify that the actions taken by the NULGE leadership are driven solely by a commitment to protect the well-being and safety of all Local Government workers amid the ongoing crisis in the state. We do not take such serious measures lightly; rather, they are aimed at safeguarding our members during a period marked by instability and political strife.
“The actions undertaken by NULGE are not rooted in personal ambition or selfish interest, as unscrupulously suggested by some. Rather, these measures have been taken to safeguard the welfare and security of our members amidst ongoing civil unrest and uncertainty. The claim that I unilaterally shut down local government secretariats, maternity centers, and other essential services without consultation is not only inaccurate but also a disservice to our collective mission.
“The decision to close these facilities was made in the interest of protecting Local Government workers from potential dangers arising from factional conflicts and political strife. In situations where “two elephants fight, the grass suffers,” it is our responsibility to ensure that our members do not become collateral damage in the political arena.
“Allegation of Selfish Interest- The characterization of my actions as selfish or politically motivated is unfounded. The leadership of NULGE prioritized the safety and security of our workers. This decision, therefore, reflects a commitment to serve our members’ interests, ensuring that they are not exposed to harm during this tumultuous period.
“Political Affiliations and Actions-While it has been alleged that I am politicizing the actions of NULGE and seeking personal gain, I must reiterate that NULGE is an apolitical union dedicated to promoting the welfare of Local Government employees. Any legal action taken, including those against specific political figures, is aimed at safeguarding the integrity of our union and its members. It is worth noting that these actions do not compromise our commitment to serving all governments in power, regardless of political affiliations.
“Impact on Public Services- The claim that our decisions have led to the denial of basic services, such as maternity care, ignores the broader implications of the ongoing crisis in the local government. We cannot overlook the challenges posed by the current insecurity, and decisions taken were to prioritize safety over performance without adequate protective measures in place.
“Addressing Local Government Workers’ Concerns- I understand the frustrations expressed regarding delays in essential services and the impact on citizens. However, it is crucial to recognize that these actions were not taken lightly; rather, they were necessary steps in ensuring that the health and safety of our workers and the public are safeguarded first.
“I urge all Local Government workers to remain steadfast in our commitment to serve and protect the public. Our resolve should not be undermined by political squabbles or personal vendettas. As your president, I assure you that NULGE will continually strive to provide leadership, ensuring the security of all members regardless of external pressures.
“I call on all Local Government workers to respect the directives aimed at fostering a safer work environment. We will liaise with relevant authorities to guarantee that your concerns are prioritized while also addressing the ongoing political challenges.
“In closing, I want to reiterate that NULGE’s primary interest lies in the welfare and protection of Local Government employees in Osun State. We must not allow the misunderstandings and mischaracterizations to detract from our mission of public service.”
