As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to commemorate Children’s Day 2025, Chairman of the House Committee on Public Accounts, Representative Bamidele Salam, has urged government institutions, families, and civil society to move beyond symbolic gestures and take concrete action to protect and empower the nation’s children.
In a statement released by his media aide Joshua Afolabi on Tuesday, Rep. Salam underscored the need for deliberate investments in child welfare, particularly in the areas of education, health, and civic participation.
He described this year’s theme, “Little Footsteps, Big Future,” as a timely reminder of the critical role children play in shaping national development.
“The greatest investment any nation can make is in its children.
“They deserve a society that protects them from harm, supports their education, and encourages their participation in building a better future,” said Salam.
Salam, who also the founder of the Children of Africa Leadership and Values Development Initiative (CALDEV Africa), highlighted the organisation’s ongoing efforts to nurture young leaders across the continent through mentorship, civic education, and leadership training, particularly in underserved communities.
“We are committed to preparing the next generation of ethical, courageous, and visionary African leaders,” he said.
Reflecting on the responsibility of adults in shaping children’s lives, Salam remarked, “Children are like open cheques given to adults to write on. What we inscribe on their hearts and minds today determines the value they carry into tomorrow.”
The lawmaker called for urgent action to address persistent issues affecting Nigerian children, including the high number of out-of-school children, child abuse, malnutrition, and limited access to quality healthcare.
“Every child deserves a chance to thrive.
“We must strengthen our laws, implement inclusive policies, and create safe spaces where every child can grow with dignity and hope,” he said.
Concluding with a message of encouragement, Rep. Salam assured Nigerian children of his continued support and advocacy: “You are not just the leaders of tomorrow; you are the heartbeat of today. We celebrate you, we believe in you, and we are committed to building a nation where you can dream boldly and live freely.”
