Driver docked for allegedly stealing employer’s N22m

A 33-year-old driver Oluwatosin Eko, was on Tuesday, arraigned before the Igbosere Magistrate Court, in Lagos, sitting at Ebute-Metta, for allegedly stealing N22,280,000, from his employer.

Eko was arraigned on two counts bordering on conspiracy, and stealing preferred against him, by the police.

The Police Prosecutor, Inspector Cyriacus Osuji, told the court that the defendant and others now at large conspired amongst themselves to commit the alleged theft.

Osuji said that the incident occurred at about 9 pm, at No 9 Ogun Street, Osborne Foreshore, Ikoyi, Lagos State.

He said the defendant committed the offences between June and July 2024, at his employer’s residence.

The prosecutor told Magistrate Oluwatosin Erinle that Eko stole the sum of $3,200, which is an equivalent to N5,184,000, 400 Euro, equivalent to N686,000, and 200 pounds equivalent to N410,000.

Osuji also told the court that Eko stole two sets of gold jewelry valued at N16m, adding that the total value of the items and the money stolen is N22,280,000, property of one Aderonke Sodeke.

According to him, the offences committed contravened Sections 411, and 287 (7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

However, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the offences preferred against him.

Erinle granted him bail in the sum of N1m, with two sureties in like sum.

The magistrate ordered that one of the sureties must be a blood relation, show evidence of livelihood, provide evidence of a six-month bank statement and evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

She also ordered that the sureties must be residents in Lagos State, adding that their addresses should be verified.

Consequently, Erinle adjourned the case till September 3, 2024, for mention.
