Minister of Transportation, Mr Rotimi Amaechi says Commercial activities will begin at the Lekki Deep Seaport, Lagos in September this year.
The Minister disclosed this to newsmen, while on an inspection visit of the Port in Lagos, on Sunday.
He said based on assurances from the contractors, China Communication Construction, some major equipment needed for the commencement of business activities will arrive in June.
Mr Amaechi noted that the construction of the Lekki Seaport will lead to the growth and expansion of other Ports in the country, that had hitherto been overstretched.
The Managing Director of the Construction Company, China Communication Construction, Mr Du Ruogang said the Port will add about 1.5 billion dollars to the country’s GDP annually.
He stressed the need for more land to be acquired from the Lagos State government for the Port, citing a nearby village with about 5000 inhabitants.
In response, the Minister of Transportation, Mr Rotimi Amaechi said a meeting with the Lagos State government would be held on how to relocate and compensate the inhabitants.
“I think we need to talk with Lagos management again, let’s see how to re-orientate them because actually the need for extension will be understated if we ignore it. Now that there are 5,000 persons we need to have the discussion with the community, we need to have a conversion with the Lagos state government and make provisions for their reorientation”.
The Construction of the Lekki Deep Seaport began on April 19, 2021, and is expected to be completed by September this year.
It is a three-phased project and the Lagos State government injected 106 million naira into it.
