Fraud Allegation Rocks Federal Polytechnic, Ede, Graduate Arraigned

A Magistrate Court sitting at Oja-Timi in Ede, Osun State, on Thursday arraigned a recent Higher National Diploma (HND) graduate of the Department of Library and Information Science, Federal Polytechnic, Ede, Oyewo Rukayat, over alleged fraud involving ₦1.2 million.

Rukayat was docked on two count charges bordering on obtaining money under false pretence and conversion.


According to the charge sheet, the defendant allegedly obtained the sum of ₦1,200,000 from one Muhammad Jamiu Fathia, HND II Student of the Biochemistry Department of the same institution, under the pretence of selling body cream to her.

The prosecution told the court that the offence was committed in August 2024.

The prosecutor further informed the court that the defendant allegedly converted the said sum to her personal use, knowing the representation to be false.

The offences, the court held, are contrary to and punishable under sections 419, 383(2) and 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Vol. II, Laws of Osun State of Nigeria.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Her counsel subsequently applied for bail, arguing that the offences are bailable under the law.

In her ruling, the presiding Magistrate, V.A. Adedokun, granted the defendant bail in the sum of ₦1 million with two sureties in like sum.
The Magistrate ordered that the sureties must be civil servants not below Grade Level 13, reside within the court’s jurisdiction, provide valid identification, submit three passport photographs each, and present evidence of tax clearance and utility bills.
The matter was adjourned until March 12, 2026, for further hearing.
