OAU Gets New Leadership as Tinubu Appoints Ambassador Rafiu Adejare Bello

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Ambassador Rafiu Adejare Bello as the new Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.

The appointment, which will take effect from March 10, 2026, is considered a significant development for the institution as it continues efforts to strengthen leadership and governance within the university system.

Announcing the development, supporters described the appointment as “a significant milestone for the institution,” expressing confidence that Ambassador Bello’s experience and leadership would positively impact the university.

They noted that his distinguished career in diplomacy and public service has equipped him with the capacity to provide “strategic guidance and direction to the esteemed institution.”

According to the statement, Bello’s wealth of experience is expected to help shape the future of the university and strengthen its commitment to academic excellence and institutional development.
The statement also conveyed appreciation to President Tinubu for the appointment and acknowledged the role of the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, for his support.

It stated, “We extend our sincere appreciation to President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his unwavering support and trust.

Hisleadership and commitment to education have been instrumental in this appointment.”

The statement added that Bello’s appointment “marks a new chapter in OAU’s journey,” expressing hope that his tenure would bring integrity, fairness and visionary leadership to the institution.

Ambassador Bello, who holds the traditional title of Oluomo of Edeland, is expected to assume office on March 10.

Supporters also offered prayers for wisdom and strength for him as he takes on the responsibility of leading the university’s governing council
