Drone Controversy: Journalist Asks Omowaiye to Quit AMBO Campaign Spokesperson’s Role
By Waliu Adetokun, Osogbo
An Iwo-based journalist and entrepreneur, Ben Peletu, has urged the spokesperson of the AMBO political movement, Hon. Remi Omowaiye, to step down from his position following what he described as inconsistencies in the APC chieftain’s responses to questions surrounding the alleged procurement of security drones in Osun State.
Peletu made the call in an open letter addressed to Omowaiye, a former commissioner in the state, expressing concern over his handling of questions during a recent television interview on the controversial drone procurement.
According to Peletu, journalists questioned Omowaiye about the whereabouts of the drones after payment receipts relating to the procurement surfaced in the public domain. He alleged that the former commissioner failed to provide clear and convincing explanations regarding the project.
The journalist further claimed that interviewers replayed an earlier video in which Omowaiye allegedly spoke about the purchase of the drones, but said he did not directly address the discrepancies between his previous statements and his recent responses.
“Integrity is not merely about making claims; it is about standing by them with facts and evidence when challenged,” Peletu stated in the letter.
He warned that the erosion of public trust posed a greater challenge than criticism itself and urged political leaders to uphold transparency and accountability in public affairs.
Peletu also argued that with the Osun governorship election drawing nearer, the All Progressives Congress (APC) should avoid controversies capable of distracting from issues affecting the people of the state.
“The party needs spokespersons who inspire confidence and can defend its positions convincingly under scrutiny,” he said.
In a direct appeal to Omowaiye, Peletu wrote: “I respectfully submit that you may no longer be the most suitable person to continue serving as a leading voice or spokesperson for the AMBO political movement.”
He, however, maintained that his intervention was not intended as a personal attack but as a call for reflection and accountability in the interest of the party.
Peletu further urged Omowaiye to place the APC’s interests above personal considerations, noting that “sometimes the most honourable contribution a leader can make is to step aside for others better positioned to communicate the party’s vision.”
The journalist, an indigene of Ife North Local Government currently residing in Iwo, concluded his letter by calling for unity, credibility and responsible leadership within the APC ahead of the August 15 governorship election in Osun State.
