The Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has been advised to regulate propagation of Islam in the country.
Prof Lateef Oladimeji gave the counsel while delivering the maiden inaugural lecture of Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, at the weekend.
The lecture was titled: “Roving Preachers of the Message: Deconstructing Da’wah Cross Borders”.
According to him, those interested in the propagation of Islam must be educated, knowledgeable and trained in Islamic sciences.
To this end, he said the NSCIA should establish a Da’wah regulatory body similar to its effort on moon sighting.
He said the body, when established, would help moderate and regulate the activities of those who engage in Da’wah, especially on electronic and social media.
“Aside this, there is the need for NSCIA to embark on periodic workshops and seminars for imams and scholars involved in Da’wah at state and local government levels,” he noted.
Speaking on the activities of the Jama’atut Tabligh which was the focus of the lecture, Prof Oladimeji said the movement must embrace modern telecommunication in its activities.
“The time has come for the Tabligh movement to establish modern conventional children’s schools that would prepare Muslim children for the bigger task of Da’wah,” he added.
