Muideen Adebisi, a suspected human trafficker, was detained by the police as he attempted to take four teenage girls from Ile-Ife in Osun State to Libya.
In a statement released on Monday, April 10, 2023, the State Police Spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola, said the suspect had invited the victims to a birthday party in Ile-Ife, where he had provided them with food and beverages.
Opalola added that after consuming the food and beverages, the four teenagers dozed off and didn’t awaken until they were in Kano, Nigeria, as their travel documents to Libya were being processed.
Three of the victims managed to escape and contact their parents, according to the PPRO, after they regained consciousness.
The suspect (Muideen Adebisi) invited the young girls to a birthday party at a hotel in Ile-Ife and provided them with food and drinks, according to the statement. The girls consumed the food and beverages, dozed off, and later woke up in Kano State while traveling to Tripoli, the capital of Libya. Three of the girls miraculously managed to get away in Kano, where they called their parents, who then reported the incident to the police.
While the fourth girl’s whereabouts are unknown, the other three of the girls have been reunited with their families.
The suspect claimed during questioning that the four girls had voluntarily agreed to travel to Libya mand work there.
“My brother who resides in Tripoli instructed me to get girls for him and send the girls to one man in Kano who will take them to Libya from Kano,” he said.
The suspect also informed the police that when he got to the man’s house in Kano, he met many girls that were being processed for the journey to Libya.
Opalola assured that the case would be diligently investigated and the suspect charged to court.
