The family of Otunba (Dr.) Lawrence Olu-Ibukun regretfully announces his peaceful passing at the age of 93 yrs.
Accoridng to a statement signed by Chief (Dr.) Olusegun Olu Ibukun on behalf of the family noted that, Otunba (Dr.) Olu-Ibukun was a globally celebrated engineer, academic, diplomat, traditional and community leader whose work left an indelible mark in Nigeria and across the world. Born in Ogbagi-Akoko, Ondo State, in 1932, he rose from humble beginnings to become one of Africa’s most accomplished technocrats.
He earned a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Applied Physics from the prestigious Imperial College of Science and Technology, University of London. Over his distinguished career, he held numerous international and national appointments, including:
• The first African Managing Director of the Western Nigeria Radio and Television Broadcasting, Corporation (WNTV/WNBS), a precursor to the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA)
• Member of both the Western Nigeria House of Assembly and the Federal House of Representatives;
• UNESCO Deputy Assistant Director-General for Science and Technology, overseeing over 250 global science and development projects;
• Diplomatic representative of UNESCO to several African nations and the Organization of African Unity.
He was also a recipient of multiple international honours, and a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers.
Otunba Olu-Ibukun was not only a global figure but also deeply rooted in his culture, community and faith. He held the revered chieftaincy titles of Ajagunna II and later Otunba Asiwaju of Ogbagi Land, where he remained an influential leader.
He was also a leader in the Redeemed Christian Church of God.
A man of immense intellect, humility, he authored numerous scientific papers and policy contributions during his career, while mentoring countless young professionals across Africa and beyond.
A true renaissance man, he published the novel The Return in 1970 and gave back to his community, including as a member of the Rotary Club.
He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, siblings, nieces, nephews, their children and grandchildren, extended family, and a global network of friends.
