Oshoala scores historic NWSL debut goal

Bay FC forward Asisat Oshoala says she is poised to keep making history and winning trophies in her new clime, after scoring the first ever National Women’s Soccer League goal for her new club, as they marked their US women’s topflight debut with a 1-0 win against Angel City on Monday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

It took Oshoala 17 minutes to write her name in the club’s history books, scoring the only goal of the game by expertly turning home a pass from Tess Boade.

After the game, the 29-year-old, who joined the new American club from Barcelona, was unequivocal about her mission in the NWSL.

“My career has been all about making history, doing crazy things, and I’m very happy to be part of the history of the club, I’ll never forget that,” Oshoala said during a halftime interview on the NWSL-plus broadcast.

“We just wanted to enjoy ourselves, have fun and work with each other, and that’s what we did. We worked for each other. That’s what we’ll do until we get it right,” Oshoala told Mercury News after the game.

Goalkeeper Lysianne Proulx also made incredible saves to protect the win and Oshoala called her the MVP.

“She was our MVP,” Oshoala said.

A serial winner at Barcelona, Oshoala scored 117 goals in 162 appearances over five years before joining the American club on a two-year-deal. In Spain, she won two UEFA Women’s Champions League titles, four league titles, three Spanish Super Cups and the Copa de la Reina three times.

Before her Bay FC debut on Monday, she was unequivocal about her mission in the NWSL.

“I’m not here to chill or enjoy the weather; I’m here to win trophies. Every club I played for, except Liverpool, I made sure I won trophies before leaving. This is the same thing I want to do with Bay FC.”

Having made her debut away from home, another chance to keep making history will come for the six-time CAF Women’s Player of The Year next Sunday when they host Michelle Alozie’s Houston Dash in their first home game at the PayPal Park in San Jose, California.

Formed in April 2023, Bay FC were penciled for the NWSL as an expansion team in the 2024 season, which began last Saturday.
