Lagos Gov’t reveals plan to redesign Oshodi transport interchange

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to redesign the Oshodi Transport Interchange (OTI) as part of preparations for integrating the facility with the state’s Rail Mass Transit system.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, noting that the state government is addressing ongoing developments and challenges affecting the interchange in readiness for the integration of the Red Line rail project with the Blue Line rail system.

“The ministry recognised that a review of the OTI’s design and operations is essential for its optimisation and so a meeting with relevant stakeholders to discuss the current state of the OTI,” Osiyemi stated.

He explained that the review would identify viable solutions to enhance operational efficiency in alignment with global standards and best practices.

According to Osiyemi, the ministry will conduct a site visitation to assess the interchange’s current state, which will inform decision-making on its optimal usage.

“It was proposed that it is necessary to engage the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency to ensure swift and periodic road maintenance around the OTI facilities to enhance accessibility and safety for all commuters,” he said.

He further revealed that the government would launch a holistic enforcement initiative to curb street hawking within the interchange, a problem that has raised concerns about pedestrian and commuter safety.

“This initiative will involve collaboration with law enforcement agencies to ensure compliance and the maintenance of order in and around the interchange,” Osiyemi added.

The commissioner urged relevant stakeholders to submit identified grey areas requiring improvement ahead of the next site inspection, emphasizing that a collaborative approach would lead to targeted solutions and a more effective transport hub.

He assured residents that the Ministry of Transportation is committed to ensuring that the Oshodi Transport Interchange operates at its highest potential, serving as a key component of Lagos State’s integrated mass transit system.

“It is believed that with the ongoing collaboration and proactive measures, the ministry can enhance services and provide a seamless commuting experience for its citizenry,” Osiyemi said.
