A father, Fernando Vega has been charged with capital murder in connection with the deaths of his twin newborn daughters, Massail and Mirena, who were found dead in their home in Houston on October 4, 2023.
If found guilty, Vega could face the death penalty, per report from Daily Mail UK.
Vega was initially arrested on April 19 and charged with causing serious bodily injury to a child, along with the twins’ mother, 21-year-old Angelina Belinda Calderon.
However, after further investigation, his charges were upgraded to two counts of capital murder as authorities determined he was allegedly the only one responsible for the infants’ deaths.
On the morning of October 4, police discovered the six-week-old twins unresponsive on a couch in their residence on Linden Creek Way.
Upon arrival, officers noted the infants exhibited discolored skin and bruises across their bodies; one of the girls had visible fractures.
Court documents revealed that the twins had been discharged from the hospital without proper medical care, and both were malnourished.
Dr. Jesus Rico, a pathologist at the Harris County Institute of Forensic Science, conducted an examination and found signs of dehydration, bruises, and fractures indicative of prior abuse.
Additionally, one twin showed evidence of acute brain bleeding and spinal cord injuries, suggesting recent trauma.
During a court hearing on Wednesday, prosecutor Edward Appelbaum stated that he intends to conduct a thorough investigation into the twins’ deaths before finalizing any murder charges.
The case remains under investigation as Vega awaits trial.
