FROM YESTERDAY’S ACHIEVEMENT TO TOMORROW’S LEGACY

THE ADELEKE JOURNEY AND THE KEY ROLE OF ALHAJI KAZEEM AKINLEYE

Every political journey has a story, and the story of Governor Senator Nurudeen Jackson Ademola Adeleke and the Adeleke political dynasty in Osun is one of determination, setbacks, persistence and eventual victory. Behind such victories, however, are people whose efforts may not always receive public attention. They are the people who remain committed during difficult moments, build relationships, mobilise support and help keep a political movement moving forward. Alhaji Kazeem Akinleye is one of those figures. His political journey reflects the role of someone who has helped maintain momentum and keep a collective effort moving towards its goal. From the struggles that preceded the Adeleke administration to the victory that brought it to power and the responsibilities of governance today, Akinleye has remained part of that evolving journey.

The road to political success was not easy. There were disappointments, political disagreements, criticism and moments when the desired destination appeared uncertain. During those periods, grassroots mobilisation and strong relationships were important in keeping the political structure active. Akinleye’s involvement in political engagement and his connections with supporters and stakeholders formed part of that effort. When Ademola Adeleke eventually became Governor, the nature of the work changed. The struggle for political power gave way to the responsibility of using that power to serve the people. Campaign promises now had to face the realities of government, and citizens were looking beyond political speeches to roads, schools, healthcare, jobs, security and other improvements that affect everyday life. In this transition, Akinleye moved from being part of a political movement seeking victory to serving as Chief of Staff within the government that emerged from that victory.

As Chief of Staff, Akinleye operates close to the centre of the administration. His responsibilities involve working with different people, understanding the Governor’s priorities, managing relationships and helping ensure that important issues receive attention. Much of this work happens away from public view. While citizens may see the Governor at official events or hear government announcements, they may not see the discussions, consultations and decisions that take place beforehand. This less visible side of government requires patience, discretion, communication and sound judgment. Akinleye’s political experience gives him an understanding of the relationships surrounding the administration, while his present position places a responsibility on him to use that experience in support of effective governance. Being close to political power is important, but how that access is used is even more important.

This is where Akinleye’s contribution becomes more meaningful. Yesterday, the task was to help keep a political movement alive and moving towards electoral success. Today, the challenge is to help sustain that success by supporting the work of government. The two responsibilities are different. Campaigning is about convincing people to believe in what can happen, while governing is about showing people what has actually been achieved. The present stage therefore demands more than political loyalty. It calls for competence, patience, responsibility and the ability to work with people who may have different interests and opinions. At the same time, Akinleye’s role should be seen within the larger government structure. The Governor provides leadership, while commissioners, permanent secretaries, civil servants and other officials carry out their own responsibilities. No single individual can deliver government alone. The value of a Chief of Staff is found in helping the different parts of the administration remain connected and focused on common objectives.

For ordinary citizens, however, the most important measure remains simple: what difference does government make in their lives? Political arguments eventually fade, election posters disappear and new issues take the place of old ones. What stays with people is whether government listened to them, whether promises were followed by action and whether their communities experienced meaningful improvement. That is the broader test facing the Adeleke administration, and it is also the environment in which Akinleye’s contribution will be judged. His position gives him influence, but influence comes with responsibility. The real value of that influence will depend on how effectively it is used to support the Governor’s programme and contribute to the welfare of the people.

The future of the Adeleke political dynasty will depend on its ability to build on its achievements while responding to the changing expectations of Osun people. For Akinleye, the journey may also be entering a new phase. His experience in political mobilisation, his understanding of the Adeleke political structure and his present responsibilities have given him a foundation from which greater opportunities could emerge. Whether those opportunities take him to higher responsibilities within Osun or eventually to a wider role in Nigerian politics cannot be predicted with certainty. Politics changes, relationships evolve and public confidence has to be earned repeatedly. His future will therefore depend on his performance, judgment, relationships and ability to demonstrate that the trust placed in him can produce value for the people.

Seen from this perspective, Alhaji Kazeem Akinleye’s place in the Adeleke journey goes beyond the title of Chief of Staff. He represents one of the people who have helped maintain the momentum of a political journey that has moved from struggle to achievement and now to the responsibilities of government. Yesterday, he was part of the effort that helped move the political movement towards victory. Today, he is part of the team facing the challenge of turning that victory into effective governance. Tomorrow may present another opportunity for him to contribute to the continuing story of the Adeleke dynasty. Whether that opportunity becomes a greater political responsibility will depend on what he does with the responsibility he has today.

At the centre of that journey is Alhaji Kazeem Akinleye, a key driving force behind the Adeleke political journey, from its difficult years to electoral victory and the realities of governance. His political journey is still unfolding. With continued service, sound judgment and commitment, he may earn greater responsibilities in Osun and, perhaps, on the national stage.

The journey has brought him this far. What he does with the opportunity before him will determine how far he goes.**
