The Civil Defense, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board has appointed Deputy Comptroller General of Immigration, Adepoju Carol Wura-Ola, as the acting Comptroller General of Immigration.
The board oversees the Federal Fire Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the Nigerian Correctional Service.
Wura-Ola would be replacing Isah Jere.
The PUNCH reports that Jere’s tenure had ended on April 24 but was extended by the immediate past president, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd).
However, a letter dated May 26, 2023, signed by the Secretary of the board, Ja’afaru Ahmed, announced Wura-Ola as the acting CG.
He said the appointment takes effect from May 3, 2023.
Titled “Letter of approval to cover duties of the office of the Comptroller-General, Nigeria Immigration”, It partly read, “I write to convey the approval of the Chairman of the Board for you to cover duties of the Office of the Comptroller General, Nigeria Immigration Service as the most senior Deputy Comptroller General. This instruction takes effect from Tuesday, May 30, 2023.
“You are enjoined to bring to bear your wealth of experience on the job as well as Consolidate on the ongoing transformation of the Service.”
Efforts to get Ja’afaru Ahmed proved abortive as his line was switched off. He was yet to respond to messages sent to him.
A source who pleaded anonymity, because he was not authorised to speak on the matter, said the extension given to Jere expired with the former president’s tenure.
The source said, “What I know is that the extension he got, his tenure ends with the president. When this happens the most senior officer would take his place in an acting capacity till a substantive CG is appointed.”
