Gabon coup: African leaders must stop taking leadership as inheritance — Uche Nwosu

A Chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and former chief of staff to the Imo State government, Uche Nwosu, has told African leaders to stop taking leadership positions as inheritance, stressing that the Gabon coup is a warning to them

In an interview with journalists, Nwosu appealed to President Bola Tinubu to collaborate with other African countries to make sure that democracy returns to Gabon, saying that whatever happens to Gabon would affect Nigeria’s economy.

“Never cling to power. Never see your country as a birthright. It is very shameful that after the military took over, people started jubilating in Gabon. Why are they jubilating? When the ovation is loud, please quit.

“Our African leaders don’t quit when the ovation is loud; they quit when the ovation is low. What will someone be doing in that seat for over 50 years? What is it that you cannot allow other people to try? So it is a warning to African leaders to stop clinging to power.

“Power is not given by man. We should be able to tell our African Leaders that once you have a constitution that mandates you stay for four or eight years, don’t prolong your stay.

But I believe some of the democratic countries, like Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa, would rally around to see how they can plead with these countries to conduct elections and ensure that we don’t have a crisis”.

While speaking on the ministerial appointments, Nwosu said it was too early to access their performance but urged the president to set up a monitoring committee to access their performance.

“If the president wants to get results, he should set up committees that would access the ministers so that those that were not able to perform would be shown the way out.”

Nwosu also guaranteed 100 per cent of the appointment of the former governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.

“Wike was one of the best governors in the last administration that did well, especially in infrastructure. Wike has all it takes to transform Abuja into a modern city. He has done it in Rivers State, and I believe he will do it again in FCT.” He added.
