The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved the establishment of Shehu Shagari University of Education, Sokoto.
The Executive Secretary, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, presented Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State with a letter of recognition for the new university, during a visit to the NUC on Monday in Abuja.
The institution is the 58th state university and the 206th in the country, according to the NUC’s boss, adding that it was the first university of education in the north and the fourth in the country.
He stated that with the approval, the National Youth Service Corps, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), and the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) would confer required recognitions on the university.
Private universities would soon spring up in Sokoto State, and the Commission has already begun the process of approving their formation, Prof. Rasheed told the governor.
Governor Tambuwal expressed his happiness at the decision and thanked the NUC for its assistance to the Sokoto State University.
He said the new institution, which is an upgrade of the Shehu Shagari College of Education, would address the state’s critical human resource needs in the field of education.
Tambuwal, who gave the NUC a copy of the university’s charter and other documentation, the institution would produce graduates who are self-sufficient.(FRCN)
