Imole Campaign Council Accuses Osun CP of Bias, Demands Release of Full Confessional Videos
By Waliu Adetokun, Osogbo
The Imole Campaign Council (TICC) has accused the Osun State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, of compromising the investigation into the alleged assassination attempt on the Director-General of the AMBO Campaign, Hon. Wole Oke.
Addressing a press conference at Osogbo, the council’s spokesperson, Pelumi Olajengbesi, Esq., said a video allegedly containing the confession of a suspect contradicts the narrative earlier presented by the Osun State Police Command.
According to him, the video raises serious concerns about the credibility of the police investigation and supports the council’s claim that innocent persons, including some leaders of the Accord Party, were deliberately targeted for political reasons.
“We demand that the Commissioner of Police immediately release the complete, unedited confessional statements and all video recordings obtained from the suspects from the point of arrest to the conclusion of their interrogation. The public deserves to know the truth, not carefully selected narratives designed to achieve political objectives,” Olajengbesi said.
He also questioned why the police claimed that influential individuals were mentioned in the alleged assassination plot without making the complete confessional statements available to the public.
“The Police Command must explain why it publicly claimed that influential individuals were mentioned in the alleged plot while withholding the actual confessional statements from Nigerians. This selective disclosure has seriously undermined public confidence in the neutrality and professionalism of the police,” he stated.
Olajengbesi warned that if the police failed to release the requested materials, the public could conclude that the investigation was influenced by political interests.
“If the Commissioner of Police fails to make these materials public, Nigerians will be left with no choice than to conclude that the Osun State Commissioner of Police has allowed himself to be used in a politically motivated attempt to smear innocent citizens and manipulate public opinion with a view to achieving further sinister motives,” he added.
The council called on the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, and the Police Service Commission to order an independent review of the investigation and sanction any officer found to have compromised the integrity of the Force.
It also urged the police to immediately arraign the suspect in court if there is sufficient evidence to support the allegations.
“We also demand that the police immediately charge the purported suspect before a court of competent jurisdiction if they genuinely believe any offence has been committed,” Olajengbesi said.
The spokesperson further alleged that information available to the council indicated that Hon. Wole Oke was mounting pressure on the police to grant the suspect administrative bail in order to prevent the case from being tested in court.
“Information available to the Imole Campaign Council indicates that Hon. Wole Oke is mounting pressure on the police to grant the suspect administrative bail in what appears to be a desperate attempt to prevent the truth from emerging in open court. If the police have credible evidence against the suspect, there is no justification for shielding the matter from judicial scrutiny. The only credible and lawful course of action is to arraign the suspect before a competent court and allow the facts to be tested transparently in accordance with the law,” he said.
Olajengbesi maintained that the Imole Campaign Council remains committed to peaceful and issue-based politics, adding that it would continue to oppose any attempt to use state institutions against political opponents.
“With this video evidence of the confessional statement of the purported suspect in police custody, made available by spirited and conscientious Nigerians, the truth has begun to emerge, and we will resist every manipulative effort to suppress it,” he said.
