Ajegunle Traders Endorse Adeleke as Ataoja Speaks on Alleged Assassination Attempt

By Waliu Adetokun, Osogbo

The Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji Laaroye II, on Saturday alleged that he narrowly escaped an assassination attempt allegedly linked to his support for Governor Ademola Adeleke’s re-election bid.

The monarch made the claim during an event in Osogbo where members of the Ajegunle Tradesmen and Artisans Association endorsed Governor Adeleke for a second term ahead of the August 15 governorship election.

According to the traditional ruler, gunmen invaded his palace and opened fire in what he described as a politically motivated attack. He said some of his aides sustained gunshot injuries during the incident.

“My palace was attacked. I was obviously the target, all because of our support for Governor Adeleke’s re-election. This is political bitterness taken too far,” the monarch said.

Oba Laaroye alleged that those behind the attack were the same individuals responsible for recent shootings in parts of Osogbo. He, however, noted that security agencies had commenced investigations into the matter.

Despite the incident, the Ataoja declared that neither he nor the people of Osogbo would be intimidated into withdrawing their support for the governor.

“I see the governor overcoming all his enemies because of his good work. Osogbo people are happy with his performance. As he is performing in Osogbo, he is doing the same in Ede and other towns. We have a duty to reward a governor who has delivered to the people,” he said.

The monarch urged political actors and their supporters to shun violence and embrace peaceful democratic processes.

“I appeal against political violence. I urge you all to use your votes to settle political differences. We have seen what Governor Adeleke is doing. Osogbo will not abandon him. We are for the governor,” he stated.

He also called on security agencies to strengthen security across Osun State to prevent further violence and ensure peaceful elections.

At the event, members of the Ajegunle Tradesmen and Artisans Association unanimously endorsed Governor Adeleke’s second-term bid through a voice vote amid songs and celebrations.

Speaking on the endorsement, the Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Rev. Bunmi Jenyo, described the association as loyal supporters of the governor and urged them to sustain their backing in the forthcoming election.

Yeye Dupe Adeleke-Sanni, who represented businessman and philanthropist Dr. Adedeji Adeleke, announced a donation of N80 million on behalf of Dr. Adeleke, herself and music star Davido to support members of the association.

She urged the traders and artisans to support Governor Adeleke’s re-election bid at the polls.

Responding, Governor Adeleke described the endorsement as a significant boost to his campaign and thanked the association for its continued support.

“Ajegunle tradesmen, you have done it again. I accept this endorsement and I pledge never to let you down. Let us mobilise for an overwhelming victory on August 15,” the governor said.

The event was attended by members of the National Assembly, members of the Osun State Executive Council and other senior government officials.
