Mohbad: Lagos Chief Coroner writes Falana, to commence inquest on Friday

A Lagos Magistrate’s Court sitting in Ikorodu, will on Friday September 29, 2023 commence coroner inquest on the circumstances leading to the death of late musician, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.

A letter dated September 26, 2023 written to Human rights lawyer Mr Femi Falana SAN stated that the inquest will hold at the Magistrate Court 3, Candide Johnson Courthouse, Ita-Elewa, lkorodu, Lagos.

The coroner’s inquest is to unravel circumstances surrounding the death of the 27-year-old singer who died on September 12.

His death has continued to generate reactions.

The letter signed by the coroner magistrate on behalf of the Chief Coroner, Justice M.A Dada stated that the proceedings will start 12noon.

The letter reads: “I have the directives of the Chief Coroner Lagos State, Hon. Justice M.A Dada, to notify your good office of the his Lordship’s order to convoke an inquest into the death of the above named Late Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba Aka “Mohbad”, in view of the letter from your office to the Chief Coroner over the tragic death which you stated occured in lkorodu.

“Lagos State, in the circumstances which requires the convocation of an inquest pursuant to the extant provisions of Sections 14 & 15 of the Coroner’s System Law of Lagos State, Cap C15, Laws of Lagos State 2015.

“Your office is hereby notified that preliminary enquiries into the death of Late Ilerioluwa Oladimej! Aloba Aka “Mohbad”, by the undersigned coroner will commence on Friday the 29th September, 2023 at Magistrate Court 3, Candide Johnson Courthouse, Ita-Elewa, lkorodu, Lagos”.

Falana had requested a coroner’s inquest into the circumstances surrounding the passing away of musician.

In a formal letter addressed to the Chief Coroner of the High Court of Lagos State in Ikeja, Falana expressed deep concern about what he referred to as a “very tragic death.”

He cited the Lagos State Coroner’s Law of 2007, specifically Section 15, which stipulates that an inquest should be conducted when a coroner becomes aware of a death within their district that results from violent, unnatural, or suspicious circumstances.

In the letter, dated September 18, 2023, signed and shared by Folakemi Falana via Instagram on behalf of the law firm, Falana & Associates, the urgent need for an investigation into Mohbad’s death within Lagos State was emphasised.

The letter further read, “We hereby request Your Lordship to conduct an inquest into the circumstances surrounding the tragic death in Lagos State, and we are confident that Your Lordship will accede to our request with utmost urgency.”
