Osun Election, Toughest Test of Our Democratic Values in 35 Years — Adeleke

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has described the 2026 governorship election as the toughest test of the state’s democratic values since its creation 35 years ago.
Adeleke stated this in a statewide broadcast on Thursday to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the creation of Osun State.
The governor commended the people of the state for their resilience, courage and commitment to democracy despite the violence and tension that accompanied the recent governorship election.
He acknowledged the pains suffered by residents in the aftermath of the election, particularly families who lost loved ones and those injured during the violence.
“We all recognise the unfortunate disruptions in our lives due to the recent governorship election. In many fora, I empathize with many families who lost loved ones. Your sacrifices and those of many who were injured will not go in vain,” Adeleke said.
He also commended residents for respecting the rule of law and resisting the temptation to take matters into their own hands despite what he described as serious provocations.
According to him, the people demonstrated their faith in democracy by turning out in large numbers to vote on election day despite the prevailing tension.
“Amidst reign of terror, you rejected the guns and embraced the ballot. As true sons and daughters of the source, you not only voted but you defended your votes even at personal risk to your lives. Again, I doff my cap for your courage and patriotism,” he said.
Adeleke said the outcome and conduct of the election had shown that Osun people remained committed to democratic values and had once again demonstrated their reputation for courage and integrity.
“Of all developments in the last 35 years of the creation of our dear state, this last state election stands out as the toughest test of who we are as a people,” he said.
“By your conduct and the outcome of the polls, Osun people demonstrated to the world that we are indeed the cradle of the Yoruba race, that we are people of valour and integrity. Nationally, my people have emerged as a shining light for democratic practice.”
The governor said the people’s commitment to democracy had also honoured the founding fathers of Osun State, noting that their actions represented a defence of democracy, good governance and the rule of law.
Speaking on his renewed mandate, Adeleke promised to work towards healing the wounds created by the election and bringing the people together.
“As you have again conferred the leadership mandate on me under recent difficult circumstances, I promise to heal the wounds, unite the people and uphold equity and fairness,” he said.
He assured residents that his administration would remain inclusive and open to criticism as part of efforts to improve governance and accelerate development.
Adeleke said the government would build on its achievements in infrastructure, digital economy, sports development, agricultural mechanisation, education and healthcare.
He added that youths, women and students would continue to receive special attention, while the government would expand industrialisation, improve workers’ welfare and intensify rural development.
The governor also promised a renewed focus on the ease of doing business, wealth creation and poverty reduction across the state.
He said the administration would continue to implement its five-point agenda in accordance with due process, procurement regulations and best practices in project execution.
Adeleke further disclosed plans to strengthen the local content policy and expand financial inclusion through cooperative sector financing.
On the issue of election-related violence, the governor appealed to residents to remain peaceful and law-abiding, warning against reprisal attacks.
“Our administration is setting up a Commission of Inquiry on election violence. The body will take memorandum from all victims and residents who are affected by recent electoral violence,” he said.
He explained that the commission would investigate the causes of the violence, recommend appropriate remedies and suggest measures to prevent a recurrence.
Adeleke also announced the establishment of an election victims’ compensation fund headed by the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun.
According to him, the initiative is aimed at reducing the impact of the violence on affected residents and families.
“On this anniversary day, we have a lot to be proud of despite our challenges. I seek your continued cooperation to further deliver good governance. I will work harder never to disappoint you, the great people of Osun State,” Adeleke said.
He wished the people of the state a happy 35th anniversary and called for continued peace, unity and cooperation in the development of Osun State.
