Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has described the upcoming September 21 governorship election as a “do-or-die” affair.
During a recent meeting with Abdulsalami Abubakar, former military Head of State and Chairman of the National Peace Committee, Governor Obaseki made allegations that the Nigerian police were compromised and working in favour of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and attempting to make the election violent.
Obaseki also expressed concerns about the police force detaining 10 PDP members without sufficient evidence.
Obaseki stated, “You are very conversant with the politics of Edo State. You were here in 2020, and we had a very heated election.”
He continued, “Unlike 2020, I am very worried about the developments in the state today. The party met yesterday, and we may not sign this agreement.”
Obaseki criticized the police for creating a destructive environment, contrary to their role in maintaining and enforcing the peace accord.
He accused the APC of using federal power to influence the election outcome, despite their lack of popularity.
Obaseki emphasized the importance of the election, saying, “This election is a do-or-die. Do you want insecurity? Do you want people that didn’t go to school to lead us?”
He urged voters to support the PDP, saying, “Next Saturday is the election, you will vote for PDP and our next governor is Asue Ighodalo.”
Earlier, Obaseki welcomed top APC chieftains, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, to the state for the grand finale of Senator Monday Okpebholo’s campaign.
