In an escalation of deepening war with Osun state APC, loyalists of Mr Dotun Babayemi and Bola Oyebamiji, both gubernatorial aspirants of the party, engaged in bloody clash over campaign territory.
The clash left several wounded and properties damaged.
Eye witnesses reported that violence was ignited when supporters of Babayemi started destroying billboards of Oyebamiji located in strategic areas of Gbongan town. They also attacked Oyebamiji men in the town.
Their grouse according to investigation was that Oyebamiji’s incursion into Gbongan, the home base of Babayemi. They see Oyebamiji presence in Gbongan as an insult to their group.
Oyebamiji reportedly countered that Babayemi is not on ground in his town where the royal father had since endorsed Governor Adeleke. The Gbongan monarch had endorsed the governor during the opening of the rehabilitated Cooperative College at Ode Omu.
The Oyebamiji group reportedly retaliated by mobilising thugs and loyalists to launch fierce counter attacks on the Babayemi supporters in Gbongan, leaving several residents injured.
Eye witness accounts reported that both groups dealt deadly blow on each other before police intervention to separate the warring groups.
” They came in several hilux jeeps and shooting everywhere. The Babayemi started the fight. But groups fired several shots. We ran for safety”, the witness recounted.
The Gbongan incident came few hours after a dangerous viral video from Mrs Ero Arike set the various political camps within the APC on fire.
The video had followed an earlier accusations about EFCC cases against certain aspirants within the party.
